I had received news of financial aid (Babson fellowship) along with my Babson admit decision. The fellowship entails a certain amount of hours I need to work per year in order to receive the aid amount.
A few days back, I received an email asking me to check the details of available fellowship assignments on the Babson portal. The assignments included different positions in the Accounting, Grad School Marketing, Entrepreneurship research, Macroeconomics, Marketing, Venture Capital and Executive Education marketing teams amongst others. In total, roughly 25 ads for around 45 positions were advertised, with each team having 1 or 2 openings at a maximum. There is a mix of people from different Babson programs (One Year MBA, Two Year MBA etc.) who received the fellowship and there were enough opportunities for all people to apply to based on their interests.
The way it works is that you check up the assignment description and get in touch with the contact person to schedule an interview. I emailed my Babson-format resume to the project contacts with a brief cover letter explaining my interest in the position. During the interview, you are given a background to the people you will be working with and the projects that the group is currently working on and the ones it plans to start soon. Once you decide to accept, you need to communicate the decision to the Babson coordinator.
I was keen to participate in more than one position on offer and sent in my requests to the Arthur M. Blank Center of Entrepreneurship, the Babson Executive Education department and the Graduate School Marketing team. After a couple of interviews, I was accepted into and chose to work in the Arthur Blank Center team comprising Profs. Bill Bygrave, Julian Lange and Ed Marram.
The team is comprised of the three professors guiding a team of six Babson students (3 in second year and 3 in the first year) in researching different entrepreneurial topics. I will most probably be working on research into clean tech companies backed by venture capital and studying the characteristics of serial entrepreneurs. The deliverables will be published papers and we have the flexibility to schedule our work around lean times during school (supposedly non-existent!
)
I am really excited to have been accepted and to be working with professors of the caliber of Profs. Bygrave, Lange and Ed Marram. The subject matter is also close to my heart as I want to invest time in learning about potential clean tech opportunities to (hopefully) start a venture in that space soon!
So, yeah! Thats been the story so far. Hope you guys are reading in
UPDATE: I almost forgot this bit! I had also applied to the Grad School Marketing team to work under Jon Kerbs. While I ended up not taking the position, Jon let me know that he liked reading my blog and we decided to meet up once I reach school so that I can look for areas to contribute to the current Social Media team at Babson. I’m really kicked about this one as well!!!
