Hi Rocky,
Thanks for the answer. It really helps.
I've just started with application process and have begun with essays. I had almost forgotten about resume, as I've kept it for the end, and was worrying about cramming my entire work-ex in the essays. Realizing that resume will contain all these details, I can now knit my essay focusing on relevant skills and examples.

Thanks,
Vinayak

Hi Vinayak,

Schools want to see that you are employable. Instead of giving a list of your employment record through essays (which will anyways come through in your resume), you should answer the question with examples that answer to the question. Usually, taking one or two points and building around them is considered a good strategy to answer essay questions.

From what little I know of the strategy consulting process, they look for potential wrt leadership, teamwork and analytical skills. You will want to highlight relevant skills from your background.

Hope this helps.

Hi Rocky,
Thanks for the article. Very insightful.
I have question for you: I have worked in 3 companies, all IT. In the first two it was developer role and in the current it's Support lead role. Should I give equal coverage to all experiences, or just one or two line for previous companies and a paragraph dedicated to the latest experience. I'm mentioning in the application that I'm interested in strategy consulting career post-mba. Let me know your views on this

Thanks,

Thanks Orlando.

I'm surprised at the comment by the visiting speakers about the shortage of engg+mba people. While I don't have any hard numbers on applicants, I'm used to thinking a large portion of the applicant pool does comprise engineers. This is a new insight for me.

Great post.

I think having a technical background can be extremely useful. For one thing, the stereotypes that go with it (such as being a quant jock) can actually work in your favor during recruiting. Furthermore, I've heard from a number of visiting speakers that there is a shortage of engineer+MBA folks out there, making the combination very attractive (especially at tech companies and start ups).

As you mentioned, it is important to recognize the different aspects/skills of the work that are very applicable/transferable to grad school, even if you may take them for granted.
